Included studies consistently reported an increased risk associated with greater numbers of intraindividual risk factors or unhealthy behaviours and the opposite for healthy or protective behaviours. A meta-analysis of studies with dementia outcomes resulted in a pooled relative risk for dementia of 1.20 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.39) for one risk factor, 1.65 (95% CI 1.40 to 1.94) for two and 2.21 (95% CI 1.78 to 2.73) for three or more, relative to no risk factors. Limitations include dependence on published results and variations in study outcome, cognitive assessment, length of follow-up and definition of risk factor exposure. Conclusions The strength of the reported associations, the consistency across studies and the suggestion of a dose response supports a need to keep modifiable risk factor exposure to a minimum and to avoid exposure to additional modifiable risks. The validated survey measured 34 needs across five domains. Weighted generalised estimating equations were used to identify factors associated with having ≥1 current or future moderate-to-high unmet need. Results: The overall proportion of patients reporting ≥1 moderate-or-high-level need did not significantly change over time (baseline = 70 % to 4 months = 75 %), although there was a non-significant reduction in needs for patients who had a complete resection (71 to 63 %) and an increase in patients with locally advanced (73 to 85 %) or metastatic (66 to 88 %) disease. Higher levels of pain (OR 6.1, CI 2.4–15.3), anxiety (OR 3.3, CI 1.5–7.3) and depression (OR 3.2, CI 1.7–6.0) were significantly associated with current needs. People with pain (OR 4.9, CI 1.5–15.4), metastatic disease (OR 2.7, CI 0.7–10.0) or anxiety (OR 2.5, CI 0.7–8.6) had substantially higher odds of reporting needs at their next survey. The prevalence of needs was highest in the physical/daily living and psychological domains (both 53 % at baseline). Pain and anxiety had respectively the strongest associations with these domains. Conclusions: Careful and continued attention to pain control and psychological morbidity is paramount in addressing significant unmet needs, particularly for people with metastatic disease. A Delphi survey among experts was used to evaluate and prioritize the factors identified by the systematic review. Risk of bias: SIGN checklist complemented by risk of bias assessment of the adjusted analysis. Data synthesis: Definite universal risk factors were defined as those assessed in >50% of all included studies and significant in >50% of those. Potential universal risk factors were defined as those significant in >50% of studies evaluating the factor and a subgroup analysis was performed for studies of Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia. Results: We included in the systematic review 62 studies, comprising more than 300,000 patients, from which a list of 17 risk factors was derived, whose association with all-cause mortality was statistically significant in most studies. The factors address baseline patient variables, the setting of infection acquisition, factors associated with the specific infection, the inflammatory response at onset of sepsis and management parameters where relevant. There were 14 risk factors for S. aureus bacteraemia. Results: The estimated prevalence of MDD significantly increased among adolescents from 4% (95% CI 3–6%) at 13 years of age to 19% (95% CI 15–24%) at 16 years of age. From the age of 13, males were significantly less likely to have a diagnosis of MDD than females with the maximum sex difference occurring at the age of 15 (OR 0.24, 95% CI 0.13–0.47). All lifestyle risk factors were at some point significantly associated with MDD, but these associations did not differ by sex, except for body mass index. Discussion: These findings suggest that interventions designed to prevent the development of depression should be implemented in early adolescence, ideally before or at the age of 13 and particularly among young females given that the prevalence of MDD begins to rise and diverge from young males. Interventions should also simultaneously address lifestyle risk factors and symptoms of major depression.]]> Mon 21 Nov 2022 14:57:46 AEDT ]]> Implementing health policies in Australian junior sports clubs: an RCT https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:35498 Mon 19 Aug 2019 12:04:34 AEST ]]> Long-term trajectories of employment status, workhours and disability support pension status, after a first episode of CNS demyelination https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:51774 Mon 18 Sep 2023 14:29:20 AEST ]]> Baseline cardiovascular risk assessment in cancer patients scheduled to receive cardiotoxic cancer therapies: a position statement and new risk assessment tools from the Cardio-Oncology Study Group of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology in collaboration with the International Cardio-Oncology Society https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:44599 Mon 17 Oct 2022 16:08:38 AEDT ]]> A review of maternal overweight and obesity and its impact on cardiometabolic outcomes during pregnancy and postpartum. https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46290 Mon 14 Nov 2022 16:30:51 AEDT ]]> Perceptions of causal attribution and attitudes to genetic testing among people with schizophrenia and their first-degree relatives https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:50953 Mon 14 Aug 2023 14:36:26 AEST ]]> Do modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease post-pregnancy influence the association between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and cardiovascular health outcomes? Students in later stages of senior high school education and those who received sexual health education from teachers and parents had significantly greater cervical cancer knowledge scores than their counterparts. Interactive effects showed that school-based sexual health education was associated with higher knowledge scores than home-based education among students. Conclusions: Most female senior high school students had gaps in knowledge about cervical cancer prevention. Assessments occurred at 20 months post-stroke, using the Mini Mental State Examination and serum blood levels of cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein and serum triglycerides. Results: Hierarchical linear regression showed that only acute functional impairment significantly contributed to long-term cognitive impairment in stroke survivors. Only 12% of the sample showed healthy cholesterol levels while the remaining patients showed borderline or high cholesterol levels. In terms of BMI, only 2% of the sample were underweight, 38% were within healthy range and 26% were overweight/obese. Only eight women and four men were smokers, therefore our sample of smokers was likely too small to detect any differences between smokers and non-smokers in regard to cognitive outcomes. Conclusion: Serum cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, high density lipoprotein, serum triglycerides, BMI or smoking status did not influence cognitive outcomes in older stroke surviving individuals. These findings suggest that modification of these factors may not influence cognitive outcomes in stroke-surviving individuals however should be interpreted as preliminary given limitations in the current study.]]> Fri 11 Nov 2022 16:31:53 AEDT ]]> Postoperative Delirium is Associated With Prolonged head and neck resection and reconstruction surgery: an institutional study https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:46110 Fri 11 Nov 2022 15:37:30 AEDT ]]> Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 79 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks, 1990–2015: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2015 https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:28315 Fri 06 Oct 2023 16:24:33 AEDT ]]> Are the public tertiary education building projects devoid of risks in the Nigerian construction context? https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:49166 Fri 05 May 2023 15:30:29 AEST ]]> Thyroid cancers potentially preventable by reducing overweight and obesity in Australia: A pooled cohort study https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:45747 Fri 04 Nov 2022 10:26:56 AEDT ]]> Prevalence and correlates of modifiable risk factors for cervical cancer and HPV infection among senior high school students in Ghana: a latent class analysis https://nova.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:51363 Fri 01 Sep 2023 13:43:43 AEST ]]>
